Fun, fuel savings make motorcycles the ride of choice for some

Winchester — For Debbie Orndorff, one of the best things about riding a motorcycle is feeling in control.

“It’s just you and the road,” the local resident said. “I like the open part about the motorcycle.”

Orndorff, who works at Grove’s Winchester Harley-Davidson off U.S. 50 (Millwood Pike) east of the city, said she started riding in 1993. Her husband is also a motorcycle enthusiast.

Like many of the dealership’s employees, Orndorff rides her motorcycle to work often, especially in the summer when the weather is warm and gas prices are high.

“It can save you money on gas,” she said.

Orndorff was among thousands across the country who rode their motorcycles to work Wednesday as part of Ride Your Motorcycle to Work Day.

Motorcycle and scooter riders’ 16th annual commuting day is Wednesday, July 16th. Participation in the yearly demonstration is estimated to triple the number of riders on the road. Motorcycle and scooter groups and organizations actively encourage riders to commute by cycle on this day. On Ride to Work Day, motorcycle and scooter commuters seek improved employer recognition and support for this form of transportation and increased public and government awareness of the positive value of riding.

Largest Ever Annual Motorcycle and Scooter Ride To Work Day Expected Wednesday, July 16, 2008

This year’s 17th Annual Ride To Work Day is just a month away. The recent rise in gas prices have caused many commuters to turn to motorcycles and scooters to save money on transportation, and they are finding them to be an economical, efficient and enjoyable way to get to work and around town. Because of high world-wide gasoline prices, this is expected to be the largest RTW day ever, in terms of numbers of participants.
