Largest Ever Annual Motorcycle and Scooter Ride To Work Day Expected Wednesday, July 16, 2008
This year’s 17th Annual Ride To Work Day is just a month away. The recent rise in gas prices have caused many commuters to turn to motorcycles and scooters to save money on transportation, and they are finding them to be an economical, efficient and enjoyable way to get to work and around town. Because of high world-wide gasoline prices, this is expected to be the largest RTW day ever, in terms of numbers of participants.

Roanoke, VA – Organizers putting on a fundraiser Saturday for an injured Roanoke police officer are expecting hundreds of people — possibly 1,000 — to turn out.
The money collected from a motorcycle ride, silent auction and raffle will benefit Officer Bryan Lawrence, who was paralyzed about a month ago when he was attacked while making an arrest.
Lawrence is at an Atlanta rehabilitation facility, where he has shown progress in his recovery. In an update at carepages.com, Lawrence reported that he could move fingers on both hands, and a previous update said he could point his toes.
Registration for the ride is $20 per motorcycle and begins at 8 a.m. in the Roanoke Civic Center parking lot.

Lane Splitting In Virginia???
June 2, 2008 by Hersey · 15 Comments
I received the following email from a VABiker.NET reader with a question about Lane Splitting:
“ I just got transferred into VA from year-round-riding-Puerto Rico. I’ve been riding for over 20 years in PR. There splitting lanes is actually allowed due to the many traffic jams and so that your bike doesn’t heat up. When I starting riding in VA, I was told that lane splitting in not allowed. That is totally BS!!! Traffic around the DC metropolitan area sucks. Is there a movement to make it legal here in VA?“
Does anyone out there know if there has been any effort to allow lane splitting in VA? As fas as I know this is not something that has ever been the focus of any legislative efforts.

This year’s seventeenth annual motorcycle and scooter commuting demonstration will increase the number of riders on the road, according to Ride to Work, a non-profit advocacy organization. “Riding to work on this day shows the positive value of motorcycles and scooters for transportation. For many people, riding is an economical, efficient and socially responsible form of mobility that saves energy, helps the environment and provides a broad range of other public benefits,” states Andy Goldfine, the event organizer. Motorcycle and scooter enthusiasts and rider organizations worldwide encourage their members to ride to work on this day. Read more
