NORFOLK, Va. (AP) ― Law enforcement officers on motorcycles will be out on interstates in southeast Virginia this week to crack down on speeding and other violations.

The Motor Enforcement, Accident Reduction effort, referred to as Project M.E.A.R., will include officers from Virginia State Police along with the Chesapeake, Hampton, Newport News, Norfolk, Portsmouth and Virginia Beach police departments. The Portsmouth Sheriff’s Office also is participating.

Throughout the year, law-enforcement agencies work together on projects to increase enforcement on roads, track down people wanted on warrants and to identify criminal activity in undercover operations.

I counted about 8 on I-64 between Greenbrier Parkway and Indian River Road today at lunch, so watch yourself out there.

9th Annual FLEETRIDE
“Rumble through the Tunnels”
Saturday, October 10th, 2009

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE.

This annual Police escorted ride was started by Bayside Harley-Davidson in 2000, as a way to give back to the large military community of customers, friends and neighbors, both active duty and retired. The ride, which has become a signature event of the Hampton Roads Fleet Week celebration, “rumbles” through the areas major tunnels connecting the 7 cities of the Tidewater area, and is one of the largest motorcycle oriented military commemorations in the United States. Every year a diverse group of individuals on all different types of motorcycles come out in a resounding manner to show their support for the areas active duty and retired military members and their families. The proceeds of the event go to Navy Support Organizations including the Navy’s Morale Welfare & Recreation (MWR) and the Navy-Marine Corps Relief Society (NMCRS). Although the ride is free for active and retired military, many of these riders still make generous donations to help other military personnel and their families through hardships and difficult family separations.

Although the 2009 ride has been in planning since last year’s event, we have recently received word from the Hampton Roads Regional Chiefs of Police Association (HRCOPA) that there would be no Police escorts this year. This year’s event will continue, but in a significantly different format than years past. Riders will begin to depart Harbor Park in Norfolk at 9:30am in groups of 30-50 riders. Lead riders with a clear understanding of the route will lead the riders at a safe and reasonable speed around the planned route, ending at Bayside Harley-Davidson in Portsmouth. In addition, the V-DOT Safety Traffic Center has agreed to post traffic alerts warning motorists about the high volume of motorcycles on the interstates that morning.

This years’ event has been recognized and endorsed by Timothy M. Kaine, Governor of Virginia, and the Mayors of the cities of Chesapeake, Hampton, Newport News, Norfolk, Portsmouth, Suffolk, and Virginia Beach.

We hope this continue your support of this annual charity event for the Navy & Marine Corps Relief Society. We at Bayside Harley-Davidson are committed to showing our support for our Active-Duty and Retired Veterans, and their families. Please join us in “Supporting Our Troops”.

The crackdown on motorcycle safety comes as the fleet’s motorcycle fatalities for the current fiscal year, 21, already have exceeded last year’s total by three.

Recent updates to the Navy Traffic Safety Program emphasize fleet leaders’ concern over accidents on the road. Under the program, the Navy requires increased safety training and will hold commands responsible for ensuring its sailors know how to stay accident-free.

Motorized scooters are flying off the lot. He even bought one himself recently.

The dealership on East Little Creek Road in Norfolk sold 23 scooters in May, compared with the one or two sold the same month last year. Record-high gas prices, Ford said, are driving people to consider two-wheelers as a cheaper alternative to cars.

NORFOLK – A new course designed for sport bike motorcycle riders in the Navy and Marine Corps kicked off at Naval Station Norfolk June 4 and at other fleet concentration areas. Every sport bike rider in the Navy and Marine Corps will be required to take the course.

There has been a rise in the number of sport bike riders in the fleet, and the reason seems simple. They are sleek and colorful and built for speed. For Sailors and Marines, many of whom are naturally attracted to an adrenaline rush, this is a huge selling point. However, these same features make riding sport bikes much different than handling cruisers or touring bikes. Mishap statistics show it’s important to take these differences into account.

The Naval Safety Center (NSC) partnered with the Motorcycle Safety Foundation to create the Military Sport Bike Rider Course (MSRC) specifically for sport bike riders.
