Recently the Federal government requested comment from the general public on two important motorcycle related issues. The Motorcycle Riders Foundation submitted comment to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and to the United States Trade Representative (USTR).
Friends take trip of a lifetime

Pete Bishop and Ricky Glenn rode their Harley Davidson motorcycles across this great country from the Atlantic Ocean to the Pacific Ocean this summer calling it the trip of a lifetime. They left Virginia Beach on Saturday, June 7 and reached California on June 20. Their wives, Cyndie Bishop and Terri Glenn, joined them in Jackson Hole, Wyoming for several days.
Bishop and Glenn have been friends for many years and ride on country roads in the area. One Sunday afternoon Glenn brought up the idea of riding from coast to coast and at first Bishop thought he was kidding, he wasn’t. And from that point on the dream started to take shape as the two started thinking about the route they would take across this great country and when to make the trip.
Authorities stress importance of motorcycle safety on Virginia roadways
Charles Camden loves the freedom that comes with a motorcycle.
He rode his regularly until 5 years ago, when he hit a pothole and crashed, breaking every rib on his right side and puncturing his lung. He was hospitalized for 18 days and out of work for three months.
Now, though, he’s ready to ride again.
“The wife said no for many years,” Camden said. “She finally came around when the gas prices got high.”
Camden joins a growing number of motorcycle riders on Central Virginia roadways as more turn to the bikes because of rising gas prices.
That has authorities concerned over biker safety, and for good reason. More than 30,000 Virginians have motorcycles, but do not have a motorcycle classification on their driver’s license, according to state records.
Staying safe on your motorcycle

As gas prices rise, so do the sale of motorcycles. Now DMV officials say motorcycle accidents are up more than 40% since 2006. They say a lot of those accidents are because of inexperience, but you do have some simple options that will help you buy a bike…and live to spend the money it can help you save.
They’re beautiful machines but if not driven properly, they can end up in an ugly and terrifying scene.
Navy program stresses safety for motorcyclists

At the signal, the 11 riders started their sport-style motorcycles with a chirp of their ignitions. Engines rumbling and ready, they stood by for instructions.
The first exercise Wednesday had them making their way around a large ellipse to warm up their tires, then easing into a weaving pattern to practice working their handlebars and looking through their turns.
The riders’ immediate plan: to get better at riding the high-powered bikes, which originally were built for racing but are appearing increasingly on streets.
