Lane Splitting In Virginia???

June 2, 2008 by · 15 Comments

Lane SplittingI received the following email from a VABiker.NET reader with a question about Lane Splitting:

I just got transferred into VA from year-round-riding-Puerto Rico. I’ve been riding for over 20 years in PR. There splitting lanes is actually allowed due to the many traffic jams and so that your bike doesn’t heat up. When I starting riding in VA, I was told that lane splitting in not allowed. That is totally BS!!! Traffic around the DC metropolitan area sucks. Is there a movement to make it legal here in VA?

Does anyone out there know if there has been any effort to allow lane splitting in VA? As fas as I know this is not something that has ever been the focus of any legislative efforts.

But what about experienced riders? Most of us have been riding for years without incident—a few close calls, maybe—though rider training would benefit us too.

Few elementary school students are riding motorcycles yet, but Utah officials are taking their motorcycle safety message to those students in hopes they’ll carry it home to their parents and older siblings.

The office has taken its Ride Aware, Drive Aware campaign to 17 elementary schools across the state in response to increasing rates of motorcycle deaths on Utah roads.
