September 16, 2008 by · Comments Off on Ribbon cut for new motorcycle technician training facility

The expansion of the academy programs for Halifax County Public Schools continued Thursday morning with the ribbon cutting for the new motorcycle technician training program at the high school.

The latest expansion was part of a significant push forward in the academy programs. Virginia Gov. Tim Kaine visited Halifax County Wednesday morning for the ribbon cutting of the new Lowe’s Equine Center and Agricultural Science Academy at the Halifax County fairgrounds.

One day later, Southside Virginia Community College, represented by provost Dr. David Johnson and other college officials, took center stage at the ribbon cutting, held at HCHS.  SVCC and its president, Dr. John Cavan, have worked closely with local school officials to make the new motorcycle technician training program a reality.

MRF Remains Neutral in Presidential Race

With the national parties’ conventions behind us, we no longer have “presumptive” presidential nominees. Senators McCain and Obama are now the standard bearers of their parties. As the summer begins to fade, the campaign for the highest office in the land kicks into high gear.

It’s hardly a surprise that the Motorcycle Riders Foundation should be asked our opinion of the two men seeking the presidency. It should also not come as a shock that the high-spirited men and women who form the framework of this nationwide organization may express opinions on the candidates.

Training by military helps cut cycle deaths

September 8, 2008 by · Comments Off on Training by military helps cut cycle deaths

The November death of an active-duty senior airman on the James River Bridge illustrated two trends that alarmed Virginia’s road safety experts: Increasing numbers of motorcyclists were being killed, and a significant number were ridden by service members.

Nine months later, the Virginia State Police think a tougher enforcement campaign and increased courses for military personnel have helped reduce the number of fatal motorcycle accidents. Through Aug. 22, there were 54 motorcycle fatalities in Virginia, compared with 78 in the same period last year.

Virginia ranks last nationally in alcohol-related motorcycle deaths

September 3, 2008 by · Comments Off on Virginia ranks last nationally in alcohol-related motorcycle deaths

RICHMOND — Motorcyclists in Virginia are the worst in the nation when it comes to staying sober and staying alive, according to AAA Mid-Atlantic.

“While other states are seeing decreases in the number of alcohol-related motorcycle fatalities in 2007, Virginia deaths are roaring to new levels,” said Martha Mitchell Meade, spokesperson for AAA Mid-Atlantic.

Nationally, the number of traffic fatalities attributed to alcohol-impaired motorcyclists increased in 2007 by 7.5 percent, from 1,508 to 1,621 deaths compared to the prior year. In Virginia, traffic deaths attributed to impaired motorcyclists in 2007 increased 160 percent. Fifteen motorcyclists under the influence died in 2006 compared to 39 in 2007. The increase of 24 motorcyclist fatalities in alcohol-impaired driving crashes in Virginia was the largest in the nation.

‘Sons of Anarchy’ is ‘Sopranos’ on motorcycles

September 3, 2008 by · Comments Off on ‘Sons of Anarchy’ is ‘Sopranos’ on motorcycles

It’s amazing how quickly groundbreaking becomes conventional. That’s certainly true of TV’s love affair with anti-heroes and morally ambiguous characters. Once upon a time, they were seldom seen. In the nine years since HBO’s “The Sopranos” premiered, these rough-edged characters have become the norm.

They certainly rule in FX’s “Sons of Anarchy” (10 p.m. Wednesday), which can be boiled down to this: It’s “The Sopranos” on motorcycles with a slightly less complex, less subtle psychological component.

Instead of detailing the life of a mob “family,” “Sons” focuses on a violent, law-breaking biker gang, the Sons of Anarchy Motorcycle Club Redwood Original. Just as in a mob family, there’s a boss, Clay (Ron Perlman, “Hellboy,” “Beauty and the Beast”), who’s president of the club. His stepson, Jax (Charlie Hunnam) is vice president.

I have a class tonight so I doubt I will feeling like watching it, but I will probably set the Tivo.  If you happen to check out the first episode tonight (Sept 3 at 10pm), let us know what you think.

Ivor resident Bob Felts is roaring to get to Minnesota.

Literally.

A Virginia delegate to the Republican National Convention, Felts expects to rumble into the Twin Cities this Sunday on his Honda Gold Wing motorcycle.

“Anyone can fly to Minneapolis,” he said during a recent phone interview from his ham-curing company. “And some people might ride a bus or a train, but I’m going by two wheels.”
