			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>5/6/2009 &#8211; WASHINGTON (AFNS) &#8212; Senior leaders from the military services gathered together in the Pentagon parking lot May 1 to take part in a National Capital Region Joint Service Motorcycle Safety Event, designed to promote rider safety programs throughout the military.</p>
<p>The two-day event included motorcycle skills demonstrations, lectures on the proper use of safety equipment and a motorcycle rally. Event organizers had motorcycle simulators available for participants to test their riding skills and learn about critical decision making in various traffic scenarios such as inclement weather and increased vehicle volume.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>The November death of an active-duty senior airman on the James River Bridge illustrated two trends that alarmed Virginia&#8217;s road safety experts: Increasing numbers of motorcyclists were being killed, and a significant number were ridden by service members.</p>
<p>Nine months later, the Virginia State Police think a tougher enforcement campaign and increased courses for military personnel have helped reduce the number of fatal motorcycle accidents. Through Aug. 22, there were 54 motorcycle fatalities in Virginia, compared with 78 in the same period last year.</p>
