Fairfax HOG Ice Cream Poker Run – August 23, 2009

What better way to spend a Sunday afternoon than riding your bike while playing a round of poker? Well, ice cream of course! And we all know my philosophy that dessert comes before a meal. I thought I’d try something a little different and combine the two activities. So that is how we came up with an Ice Cream Poker Run.
It is a relatively short ride of about 100 miles leaving Patriot H-D at 11:00 a.m. on August 23rd and getting back to Fairfax around 4:00 p.m. We’ll be traveling through NOVA to visit some of my fav-or-ite ice cream spots! Stops include: Dairy Godmother in Del Ray; Nathan’s Dairy Bar in Manassas; Peterson’s Ice Cream Depot in Clifton; and the Sweet Life Cafe in Fairfax.
This ride is open to all riders on all kinds of motorcycles, so grab a friend and join me for a belly full of ice cream! Cost is $10 per hand. There will be prizes for best and worst poker hands. Door prizes will be also awarded.

Police concerned about two-wheeled traffic

Herndon resident Scott Norman, a husband and father of two young children, was one of the three motorcycle fatalities in Fairfax County this year.
On July 29, Norman lost control of his 2008 Suzuki while on Herndon Parkway, slammed into a barrier and was killed instantly. The police report estimated that he had been traveling at 77 miles per hour, more than twice the posted speed limit.
Although annual Fairfax County motorcycle fatalities have remained in the single digits in recent years, police are concerned with the potential safety issues that may come with more two-wheeled vehicles on roadways being driven by inexperienced drivers.
Moped, Scooter Riders Urged To Use Caution, Follow Laws

FAIRFAX COUNTY, Va. — Hot weather and high gas prices are causing drivers to turn to more fuel-friendly modes of transportation, but police are warning motorists to be careful with their new rides.
Fairfax police said more drivers with different experience levels are traveling by moped, scooter and motorcycle, creating safety concerns as small vehicles share the road with larger cars.
The Fairfax Police Department released a new educational brochure for operators of small vehicles.
