Temporary layoffs at Harley-Davidson Motorcycles

Harley-Davidson is trying to ride through the stormy economic times by expanding into profitable international markets and limiting production to only what can be sold.

A company spokesman announced the Milwaukee motorcycle manufacturer is laying off workers at its Springettsbury Township facility next week beginning Monday. The week layoff is in addition to Harley’s planned shutdown from June 30 through July 3.

Officials at Harley-Davidson indicated similar lay-offs were a possibility for the future as the company weathers difficult days in the American motorcycle market.

Motorcycle statue unveiled at Harley-Davidson Museum

A bronze statue of a hill-climbing motorcyclist was unveiled Monday evening on the grounds of the Harley-Davidson Museum in Milwaukee’s Menomonee Valley.

The statue, which weighs 5,000 pounds and stands 16 feet tall, is a gift from the family of Willie G. Davidson, the grandson of one of the founders of the Milwaukee-based motorcycle manufacturer.
