SB909 will be heard in the Senate Courts of Justice Committee in the near future. Now is the time to write the committee members and ask them to support SB909!
To refresh your memory:
SB909 - Reckless driving; violation of right-of-way resulting in death of another. Provides that a person is guilty of reckless driving if he violates the right-of-way of any motor vehicle causing the death of another. The court must sentence the driver to 90 days in jail and suspend his driver's license for not less than six months or more than three years, although the court may suspend the penalties if the person completes 24 or more hours of community service.

Some points you may want to address in your letters are:
- Makes a reckless driving charge mandatory in a crash where there is a fatality
- Through the proper community service there will be an aspect of prevention to this bill
- Many people that kill on Virginia’s highways get off with a simple right of way violation that carries a $35 fine and 2 points
- Doesn’t interfere with civil remedies in any way
