Tool Box Tech Tips: Installing the Bullet Proof BDL Starter Fix
Posted by herseyc on Saturday, June 10, 2006 @ 06:00:00 EDT (1222 reads)

Bullet Proof fix for bikes running rigid BDL belt drives where the starter pinion gear does not alway engage the ring gear.

Wasn't really a problem, more of an annoyance. I love my BDL 3" open belt drive that I installed on my Heritage. I like the look of it, the sound of the clutch plates clanking together, and the sound of the belt whirling around the pulleys at speed - it is bad ass.

The only real problem I have had is that from time to time I would go to start her and when I hit the starter button the starter would just spin. How often this happened usually depended on the number of folks watching. Not really a big deal, rock the belt a bit, hit the button agian and she starts right up. Like I said it is not really a problem, just an annoyance.

Tool Box Tech Tips: Stripped Threads
Posted by herseyc on Saturday, December 03, 2005 @ 06:00:00 EST (1438 reads)

Article by Kent at VirginiaWind.com
If you're going to turn wrenches you will eventually encounter a bolt, nut, or threaded hole that has stripped out threads. You may be able to install a longer screw to engage the deeper undamaged threads, but this only works on applications where there's little need for dependability. You might also be able to replace both the nut and bolt. If you can, this is usually the best way to deal with damaged parts. In some cases, however, you have make a repair by fixing the damaged part.

We all love our bikes. And perhaps our proudest moment is when the bike is new and looks its best. It is subjected to all sorts of abuses including the sun, dirt, and smog, all of which can affect the best motorcycle. Tool Box Tech Tips: Leather Care
Posted by herseyc on Wednesday, November 03, 2004 @ 07:48:18 EST (1943 reads)

If you own leather, any leather, you know it don’t come cheap. The following information will help you protect your investment.

Leather is a natural material made from the hide of animals. No two pieces of leather are identical, each hide has its own variations, little nicks and scars that the animal picked up during it’s lifetime. These are completely natural and are not defects, they should be expected in leather. These are what add contrast and character of the leather. After a while your leathers will get that 'lived in' look, this is when leather looks it’s best. In time it becomes soft and flexible and with the right care it will last for years.

Tool Box Tech Tips: Tech Tips - Loctite
Posted by herseyc on Wednesday, July 07, 2004 @ 06:48:42 EDT (2236 reads)

There’s a seldom talked about, often ignored important ingredient used all over your motorcycle that usually gets under-appreciated until you see or hear a piece of your bike bouncing down the road behind you. Yes, it’s another case of ‘Road Jewelry’. Those pieces of your bike that end up on the side of the road because you, or your trusted mechanic, were a little insecure while bolting on some prized stuff to your machine. Hopefully that piece you saw fly off your bike didn’t hit the guy behind you, or was an integral component you needed to get you home in one piece. I’m going to do my best to give you the low-down on how to make your motorcycle feel more secure. There’s a simple magic ingredient called Loctite®, which began its life in the Trinity College basement laboratory of Dr. Vernon Krieble in Hartford, Connecticut, sometime way back half a century ago in 1953.

Posted by herseyc on Wednesday, June 16, 2004 @ 09:46:43 EDT (2534 reads)

Always keep cables clean, properly lubricated where necessary and in proper adjustment. Visually inspect on a regular basis for torn or worn housing, frayed wires, signs of bending or kinking at the controls. Keep free of dirt and grime at the controls and activators. If cable is equipped with rubber covers, boots, etc., make sure no water or dirt has become trapped in them. When lubricating cables, use light viscosity oil, or aerosol spray such as teflon sprays, Dri Slide, WD-40 and others.

Tool Box Tech Tips: Checking Your Tire Pressure
Posted by herseyc on Monday, May 03, 2004 @ 08:22:11 EDT (1697 reads)

Time and outside temperature effect the pressure within your tires. It is NORMAL for a tire to lose about 1 pound per square inch (psi) per month. Outside temperatures affect your tire pressure far more profoundly, however. A tire's pressure can change by 1 psi for every 10 degrees Fahrenheit of temperature change. As temperature goes, so goes pressure.

Tool Box Tech Tips: Pre Ride Check List
Posted by herseyc on Friday, April 02, 2004 @ 08:21:14 EST (1529 reads)

What was true more than 80 years ago is true today. Roads and motorcycles are a lot different from those in the 1920s. But the need for proper maintenance and preparation is just as important as ever, especially before a long trip. The quality of the time we spend on the road often depends on what we do in the garage.
