Bikers' Rights: URGENT CALL TO ACTION - HB1979
Posted by herseyc on Wednesday, February 02, 2005 @ 18:45:08 EST (1178 reads)
Well, the Police, Militia, and Public Safety Sub-Committee met tonight. Jim Cannon attended the meeting and the result is that the sub-committee voted to Pass By Indefinitely (PBI) on HB1979 - 4 to 2.
This is really no surprise. What was somewhat of a surprise is that Drive Smart, VA had the room completely packed with people AGAINST HB1979. Jim said that several people testified, complete with tears and pleading against this bill.

Bikers' Rights: Helmet Repeal HB1979 Committee Meeting Results
Posted by herseyc on Monday, January 31, 2005 @ 06:37:16 EST (1175 reads)
First of all, a big thank you to Andy Keaton and GW who joined us today for the House Militia, Police and Public Safety Committee Meeting.
There is some confusion here and I'm not 100% clear how, why, or when this happened, but... when we arrived we learned, much to our surprise, that HB1979 was sent to sub-committee earlier. None the less, Delegate Weatherholtz sponsored a guest from Louisiana to speak to the committee about why repealing a helmet bill in Virginia is a bad idea. Even though the bill was not scheduled to be heard today, Chairman Sherwood stated that since Col. Champagne had come in from Louisianna to speak to the committee, he would be heard first before any other business.

Just got the news that HB 1979 will be heard in the House Militia, Police and Public Safety Committee THIS Friday (Jan. 21). The committee meets at 9AM in House Room C.
Bernie has been in Richmond working with Jim at the Capitol this week. I talked with both of them a few minutes ago and they had just finished meeting with each of the members of the House Militia, Police and Public Safety Committee. They feel very confident that we will make it out of this committee.

Bikers' Rights: VA Motorcycle Lobby Day a HUGE Success!
Posted by herseyc on Tuesday, January 18, 2005 @ 07:58:03 EST (906 reads)
Thank to all who showed up for Lobby Day!!! This was certainly the best Lobby Day I've ever attended. We were well represented and managed to visit with a record number of Delegates and Senators. Tom McGrath and Jim Cannon did a wonderful job with the pre-lobby day briefings on Sunday and made sure we were all well armed with information when we showed up at the Capitol on Monday. They provided each of us with a list of relevant legislation and talking points on each. There was a social afterwards and VFR provided the pizza for it. All in all, it was a wonderful weekend and while it was a "working" weekend, we managed to slip in a fair amount of fun and it was great visiting with patriots from across the Commonwealth that we do not often get the opportunity to see.

Bikers' Rights: HB1979 - VA Motorcycle Helmet Law Modification
Posted by herseyc on Wednesday, January 12, 2005 @ 07:18:16 EST (1223 reads)
The bill to reform the helmet law is HB1979. If you have not already done so, please write the representatives below right away. Mention the increase in tourism dollars passing this bill will bring to Virginia, your belief in allowing personal liberties, or anything else you feel will be gained by passing this bill. Your letter doesn't have to be long or eloquent - just write a few sentences asking for support of HB1979.

Bikers' Rights: VFR-RACE :: Call to Action - SB 726
Posted by herseyc on Tuesday, January 04, 2005 @ 14:36:45 EST (951 reads)
Russell Potts, Virginia Senate District 27, has introduced a bill that would redefine a moped to have it considered a motorcycle when operated on any highway. VCOM feels very strongly that Mr. Potts in introducing this bill under influence of the Virginia Motorcycle Dealers Association. Reclassifying mopeds to motorcycles would benefit motorcycle dealers by ensuring that other businesses (Walmart or Kmart for example) can’t sell mopeds, and that the motorcycle dealers are the only legal sellers of this type of vehicle.

Bikers' Rights: MRF LEADERS' REPORT - Ride With The LeadersTM
Posted by herseyc on Wednesday, December 08, 2004 @ 06:36:22 EST (750 reads)
It has been almost exactly one month since the American people voted on the direction of our great country and the US Congress still has not gotten their job done. Nearly 2 months after the targeted adjournment both chambers of the US Congress will be back in Washington DC to vote on the final spending measures for the 108th congress. While this seems like a bad situation for the country it gives motorcyclists one more opportunity to clear some legislation off the calendar.

Bikers' Rights: MRF Probes Georgia Lobbying Activity
Posted by herseyc on Friday, November 12, 2004 @ 06:41:30 EST (813 reads)
The MRF (Motorcycle Riders Foundation) spent the past several months researching lobbying activity surrounding rider education in Georgia. What has emerged is disturbing. Reliable sources have verified that as a result of these efforts all state funding to the GMSP (Georgia Motorcycle Safety Program) has been stripped. The Georgia program had been continually funded since 1986. Lobbying efforts have also been used to mount an assault, by industry representatives, on the Georgia state administrator. Equally disturbing, until recently, no communication on the part of the lobbyists was attempted with ABATE of Georgia, the SMRO responsible for the initial lobbying effort creating the GMSP in 1984.
