Bikers' Rights: Helmet laws don't ensure safety
Posted by herseyc on Friday, August 19, 2005 @ 09:00:09 EDT (686 reads)
The answer to motorcyclist safety is training and education, not an
ineffective helmet law.
California motorcyclist deaths and injuries dropped in 2004, not because of
helmets but because the number of accidents decreased. No helmet law
supporter has ever been silly enough to claim that mandated helmet use
caused motorcycle accidents to drop.

Bikers' Rights: No Motorcycles Travel In South Dakota?
Posted by herseyc on Monday, August 15, 2005 @ 05:00:51 EDT (827 reads)
(Washington, DC) As most everyone in the motorcycling community knows, the state of South Dakota is currently hosting the largest motorcycle rally in the country in Sturgis. Ironically, the Motorcycle Riders Foundation (MRF) has learned the State of South Dakota has reported ZERO vehicle miles traveled (VMT) for motorcycles in its annual reports to the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) each year since 1997. In fact, according to information provided to the MRF by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), there was absolutely no motorcycle VMT reported not only for South Dakota, but also for Illinois, Massachusetts, Missouri, Nevada, Pennsylvania or Texas from 1997-2003.

President Bush signed a comprehensive highway measure into law Wednesday morning in the home district of Speaker J. Dennis Hastert (R-IL). Flanked by the Secretary of Transportation, Hastert and throngs of Members of Congress, Bush declared that the $286.4 billion dollar package will "improve the safety of and modernize the nation’s highway system". He added "and in a fiscally responsible way, this bill does not raise any federal gas taxes" Bush then signed the legislation into public law.

Bikers' Rights: Media Focus on Motorcycle Helmets
Posted by herseyc on Thursday, August 04, 2005 @ 06:52:45 EDT (714 reads)
Recieved this on the Sons of Liberty Riders (SoLR) mailing list the other day and thought it was worth posting.
Two motorcyclists are riding down the road when a car comes across the line
and hits them. One ends up down the road 100 feet, and the other goes
through the car's windshield. What are the violations? The first biker is
charged with leaving the scene of the accident and the second biker is
charged with breaking and entering.

Bikers' Rights: 109th United States Congress Passes Highway Bill, Landmark Victory for Motorcycl
Posted by herseyc on Monday, August 01, 2005 @ 07:49:20 EDT (860 reads)
The US Congress voted today to enact HR 3, the highway bill. The final version that was passed out of conference committee and eventually out of both bodies of Congress contains all of the motorcycle provisions the Motorcycle Riders Foundation (MRF), State Motorcycle Rights Organizations (SMRO) and many individuals have lobbied for over the past two years. The MRF thanks every SMRO, and individual motorcyclist who came to DC to lobby, made phone calls and sent comments to advocate for this important legislation. This milestone would not have been reached without your support.

I received this in my email the other day from FastFreds Motorcycle Rights Ezine. FastFreds is a great source of info related to biker's rights and civil liberties. If you are not a member of his e-Zine I suggest you give it a look.
The article is a letter to the editor about the recent change in the seat-belt law in South Carolina, but it goes a little deeper than that and I though it was worth posting here - click the Read more for the article...

Bikers' Rights: Support your local biker!
Posted by herseyc on Monday, May 23, 2005 @ 06:37:43 EDT (756 reads)
We have a biker in Virginia who has stepped up to the plate. Sean Devlin is running for the Delegate seat of Virginia's 95th District. Hats off to Sean. This is a man who cares enough about bikers' rights in Virginia to run for a seat in the House of Delegates. He didn't feel he would see a change working with the incumbent, so he took matters into his own hands and decided to put his money where his mouth is and challenge the incumbent for his district. Great job, Sean.
