Motorcycle Rider Rights Bikers' Rights: MRF Posts Comments to NHTSA; announces extension to the comment period docket 2
Posted by herseyc on Wednesday, March 08, 2006 @ 06:42:50 EST (833 reads)

The MRF recently submitted comments in response to each of the eleven amendments proposed by the safety experts at National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). The MRF identified aspects of amendments in need of serious change and classified others as being steps in the right direction. "It is imperative NHTSA hears from all riders on this issue" said Jeff Hennie, Vice President of Government Relations for the Motorcycle Riders Foundation adding, "NHTSA updates these guidelines every six years or so. The opportunity to voice your opinion is now".

Virginia Freedom Riders Bikers' Rights: Helmet Law, Etc.: For Safety's Sake, Why Not Just Ban Motorcycles Altogether?
Posted by herseyc on Wednesday, February 22, 2006 @ 10:46:31 EST (1151 reads)

Of all tyrannies, a tyranny exercised for the good of its victims may be the most oppressive. It may be better to live under robber barons than under omnipotent moral busy-bodies. The robber baron's cruelty may sometimes sleep, his cupidity may at some point be satiated; but those that torment us for our own good will torment us without end, for they do so with the approval of their own conscience. --C.S. Lewis. As this newspaper pointed out in an editorial last week, the defeat of Delegate Bill Janis' attempt to repeal the state's motorcycle-helmet law does not mean, as the more hyperventilating riders of Hondas and Harleys would have it, that Virginians are walk- ing around in chains. A little perspective is in order. The Old Dominion is not Red China or Saudi Arabia; there's no need to stamp "REPEALED" on the Bill of Rights quite yet.

But something else is in order as well, namely a clear understanding of just what the defeat of Janis' proposal implies. Philosophically, the mandatory-helmet law is disheartening.

Motorcycle Rider Rights Bikers' Rights: Virginia bill to relax motorcycle-helmet law fails again
Posted by herseyc on Friday, February 17, 2006 @ 07:55:19 EST (686 reads)

I know I am a bit late getting this posted - it has been a mad house around here.
RICHMOND — For the fifth straight year, a proposal to ease Virginia's motorcycle helmet law has died in the House of Delegates.

The House of Delegates voted 57-42 today to kill a proposal by Del. Bill Janis that would have lifted the helmet mandate for riders 21 and older. Delegates voted 51-46 to kill the Janis-backed legislation last year.

Virginia Freedom Riders Bikers' Rights: HB26 and HB117
Posted by herseyc on Wednesday, February 08, 2006 @ 06:55:51 EST (931 reads)

We have two bills that need your immediate attention. HB26 (allows auxiliary lighting on motorcycles) eeked out of the Transportation Committee with an 8-7 vote. The next stop is the House floor for a vote. We need you to write EACH of our delegates and ask that they support HB26. Tell them that the number one reason motorists give when causing an accident with a motorcycle is "I didn't see it". Auxiliary lighting makes us more visible and this is a safety issue. Go to http://www.vfr-race.com/hb1400.html and click "Click Here to Email the Delegates ". This will bring up an email page with each of the House members' email addresses filled in for you. Type your letter and hit send.

Virginia Freedom Riders Bikers' Rights: HB1400 -The vote is in...
Posted by herseyc on Wednesday, February 08, 2006 @ 06:51:35 EST (794 reads)

As expected, HB1400 - bill to repeal mandatory helmet usage by adults 21 and over - was voted on in the House today. The bill failed to pass by 42 - 57.

Thanks to all who worked to get this bill through this year and especially those that dedicated some of their time to go to Richmond and lobby in the capitol. These efforts are priceless and as you can imagine, we need more of this during the off session.

I just spoke to Jim Cannon and we have a tentative date for HB1400 (helmet reform bill) to be heard in the Militia, Police and Public Safety Committee – Feb 3rd, Friday, 9:00 a.m., House Room C. Again, this date is tentative, but I wanted to give you a heads up so you can make contingent plans. As soon as I know for sure, I’ll send out an alert.

Motorcycle Rider Rights Bikers' Rights: EPA ruling - take action NOW!
Posted by herseyc on Tuesday, January 24, 2006 @ 07:26:15 EST (609 reads)

Many of you have expressed concern about the recent EPA ruling that affects small businesses that build bikes, as well as bike owners that work on their own. The ruling is final, but there is something YOU can do help effect some changes to that ruling. First, read the following. Become familiar with this issue:
http://mrf.org/pdf/EPA-AI-1.pdf http://mrf.org/pdf/EPA-AI-2.pdf

Second, go to the following link, print out the EPA Questionnaire that applies to you, and mail it to the address provided on the form:
http://www.aimag.com/epa/index.htm

And maybe most importantly, print out all of this information and take it to the small shop bike builders in your area and ask them to do the same.

This may be our final opportunity to take action and limit the damage of this EPA ruling. Let’s not let this pass us by. Take action NOW and spread the word!

Motorcycle Rider Rights Bikers' Rights: Virginia Helmet Law Declared Unconstitutionally Vague
Posted by herseyc on Wednesday, January 18, 2006 @ 06:44:39 EST (570 reads)

Portions of Virginia's motorcycle helmet law were declared unconstitutional on Friday, December 9, 2005 by a judge of the Newport News Circuit Court. In a ten page memorandum order, Hon. H. Vincent Conway, Jr. held that the portions of Va. Code subsection 46.2-910 which defined the standards that a protective helmet must meet or exceed were unconstitutionally vague, denied due process and were unenforceable. The decision marked another victory in the battle by the Law Offices of Tom McGrath to challenge Virginia's helmet law.

Motorcycle Rider Rights Bikers' Rights: Virginia Bill - HB1117 - Call Your Rep
Posted by herseyc on Wednesday, January 11, 2006 @ 18:27:40 EST (644 reads)

You may recall that on May 6, 2005, we lost a fellow biker and good friend, Paul Hampton (Blacksmith), when he was on a motorcycle that was struck by an automoble that crossed his lane of travel. Out of this tragedy, due to the hard work of Matt Danielson and Jim Cannon, we have a bill this year to help insure the loss of loved ones, such as Blacksmith, is not in vein. Please write your representatives (Delegate and Senator) and ask that they support HB1117. Email addresses have changed for all reps this year - you can find the correct email addresses at http://conview.state.va.us/whosmy.nsf/main?openform.
