ABATE News: ABATE of Maryland State Director - Marty Schultz - Motorcycle Fatality
Posted by herseyc on Tuesday, September 05, 2006 @ 06:46:09 EDT (970 reads)
ABATE of Maryland Press Release
Marty Schultz who was the State Director of a motorcycle rights organization
known as ABATE of Maryland, Inc., was killed by a car driver who violated
his right-of-way. Since that time there has been considerable speculation
in print and heard over the airwaves about whether or not he was wearing a
helmet. Yes, in fact he was wearing a helmet that came off during the
collision or its devastating aftermath. Although this topic is especially
significant because of Marty's position with ABATE, the same thing happens
every time there is a motorcycle accident.

ABATE News: ABATE Applauds SC Lawmakers for Passage of Motorcycle Rights Bills
Posted by herseyc on Tuesday, June 06, 2006 @ 06:00:00 EDT (800 reads)
(Columbia) - ABATE of South Carolina applauds those SC legislators, in both
the Senate and House of Representatives, that worked tirelessly to get S 772
and H 4307 passed this legislative session. S 772 was a bill that dealt with
handlebar height restrictions and H 4307 corrected the property tax issue
facing South Carolina motorcycle owners. Prior to H 4307 passing in the SC
statehouse, motorcycles registered in South Carolina were taxed annually at a
10.5% assessment rate while other private, passenger vehicles such as cars and
trucks, were taxed at a 6% assessment rate. If Governor Mark Sanford signs H
4307 into law, South Carolina motorcyclists will no longer pay higher property
tax on their motorcycles than their car and truck counterparts. All will be
assessed at 6% annually. It is anticipated that Governor Mark Sanford will
sign H 4307 into law. The Governor signed S 772 into law a few weeks ago.

ABATE News: “Helmetless” Riders are Less Likely to Die in Motorcycle Crashes on Florida Road
Posted by herseyc on Wednesday, September 28, 2005 @ 06:56:48 EDT (1224 reads)
According to the recently released, Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles annual Traffic Crash Statistics Report for 2004, motorcycle riders wearing helmets were more likely to sustain an injury or suffer a fatality than their non-helmeted counterparts. The huge increase in death and injury to non-helmeted motorcycle riders, predicted by NHTSA (National Highway Traffic and Safety Administration) in a report released this summer, has not been substantiated. The numbers are going to disappoint the proponents of helmet laws while simultaneously confirming the facts presented to the public by ABATE of Florida, Inc. (American Bikers Aimed Toward Education). ABATE is a non-profit motorcycle rights organization in Florida and has spent years focusing on motorcycle related issues, including crash prevention and stiffer penalties for negligent vehicle operators who kill and injure motorcycle riders.

Posted by herseyc on Friday, August 19, 2005 @ 09:13:16 EDT (1036 reads)
While motorcyclists have been out riding during the long summer months,
the fruits of their labor over the cold winter are beginning to pay
off. From the passage of the federal highway bill, to the discovery of
NHTSAs inaccurate reporting system on highway fatalities; from
protecting the Illinois Cycle Rider Training Program to making comments on
off-road riding in the Shawnee National Forest; motorcyclists certainly
are everywhere!
