A Virginia delegate to the Republican National Convention, Felts expects to rumble into the Twin Cities this Sunday on his Honda Gold Wing motorcycle.

“Anyone can fly to Minneapolis,” he said during a recent phone interview from his ham-curing company. “And some people might ride a bus or a train, but I’m going by two wheels.”

Harley-Davidson Recalled Almost 50-Thousand 2008 Motorcycles August 20, 2008 Harley-Davidson Motor Company is recalling 47,500 2008 FLHP, FLHPE, FLHR, FLHRC, FLHRSE4, FLHT, FLHTC, FLHTCU, FLHTCUSE3, FLHTP, FLHX, and FLTR model motorcycles. These recalled Harleys may experience a loss of fuel pressure due to a cracking of the fuel filter shell. A loss in fuel pressure could lead to stalls and failure starting. Stalling in traffic can result in crash and injury for the rider.

Harley-Davidson dealers will replace the fuel filter shell for free beginning on or before August 4th. To locate a Harley dealership near you for a replacement fuel filter shell, Harley owners should call 414-353-4056.

BLACKSBURG — Forget the romantic photos of windswept babes with coifed hair motoring around Europe on curvaceous Vespas. Beginning in October, moped riders in Blacksburg have two choices: helmet hair or a $50 fine.

Technically, the new helmet law — which requires helmets and eye protection for riders and drivers of mopeds — went into effect Aug. 12, after Blacksburg Town Council approved it on a unanimous vote. But for the next few weeks, police will focus on education instead of punishment.

ALTON, Va. — A teenage motorcycle racer at Virginia International Raceway died Monday from injuries suffered during Sunday’s event.

Toriano Wilson, a 14-year-old road racer from Bermuda, fell on the track during the first lap of the Red Bull AMA U.S. Rookies Cup race. Wilson was then struck by another rider while attempting to get out of the way.

When he pulled in to Main Street Getty Mart at 1115 Main Street in Roanoke, he also played the Virginia Lottery’s Harley-Davidson® Scratcher game. That decision won him a 2008 Harley-Davidson® 105th Anniversary Fat Boy® Motorcycle.

“I went to my truck and scratched the ticket,” Mr. Harvey told Lottery officials. “I’ve always wanted a Harley. I couldn’t believe I’d won.”

Va Motorcycle Fatalities up 80%

Two people were killed in Southwest Virginia on Sunday in motorcycle crashes that occurred within hours of each other.

In Washington County, Joshua Smith, 21, of Raven, Va., died after losing control of his Yamaha motorcycle while rounding a curve on state Route 75 at about 2 p.m.

Virginia State Police Sgt. Michael Conroy said Smith crossed the center line and drove into the path of a pickup heading north.

More motorists are trading in or parking their larger motor vehicles for motorcycles as a way of beating the rising cost of gasoline. Nationwide, there is an increase in motorcycle traffic on highways and countryside roads. Yet, with this increase in ridership there is an increase in motorcycle accidents. Although, the U.S., in recent years, has been successful in reducing automobile deaths, the National Highway and Transportation Administration (NHTSA — http://www.nhtsa.gov) indicates the rate of motorcycle fatalities has more than doubled in the past 10 years — 2,116 in 1997 to more than 4,800 in 2006 — offsetting the gain in lives saved from higher seat belt use and improved passenger vehicle safety. Currently, motorcycle fatalities are the nation’s greatest highway traffic safety challenge.
