Spring Motorcycle Safety Reminder

April 13, 2010 by · Comments Off on Spring Motorcycle Safety Reminder

Within the past 11 days 6 motorcyclists have lost their lives in traffic crashes on Virginia’s highways. The number of motorcycles on the roads traditionally increases in the spring months.

“As the spring weather entices more people to take to the roads to enjoy the warm temperatures and scenery, we remind everyone to be more aware of other motorists,” said Colonel W. Steven Flaherty, Virginia State Police Superintendent. “It’s easy to become distracted when enjoying the views Virginia has to offer this time of year. However, the driver’s primary focus must be on the road in order to keep our highways as safe as possible for everyone’s sake.”

  • Drivers are reminded to be on alert for motorcycles, especially when pulling out into or across traffic, and when changing lanes.
  • Riders are encouraged to wear proper riding gear and take advantage of motorcycle training safety courses (available through the Virginia Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV)
  • All motorists are advised to comply with speed limits, avoid tailgating, use signals when appropriate, and be courteous and responsible when sharing the road with one another.

January 6, 2010 by · Comments Off on Congressman Randy Forbes Of Virginia Joins Congressional Motorcycle Safety Caucus

Washington, D.C., Jan. 6, 2009 – U.S. Representative Randy Forbes (R-VA) officially joined the Congressional Motorcycle Safety Caucus in December 2009. He joins a bipartisan group of Members of Congress including Caucus Co-chairs Representatives Michael Burgess (R-TX) and Gabrielle Giffords (D-AZ), committed to improving and advancing the safety of motorcyclists.

Forbes commented, “While motorcycling is fun recreation and affordable transportation, it is important to remain focused on safety. The Motorcycle Safety Caucus encourages motorcyclists to get trained and licensed, obey traffic laws, avoid mixing riding with alcohol and wear proper, motorcycle-specific safety gear, but it doesn’t stop with riders. The Caucus serves to also remind other motorists that motorcyclists use the roads as well, and to remember to look for motorcycles particularly when turning or changing lanes.”

Feds, Fairfax break up stolen-motorcycle ring

November 2, 2009 by · Comments Off on Feds, Fairfax break up stolen-motorcycle ring

Federal customs officers say they have rolled up a motorcycle theft ring that stole bikes from Maryland and Virginia and smuggled them overseas.

Agents at the Port of Baltimore were alerted by Fairfax County police investigating an auto theft ring who said a shipping container bound for Bolivia might contain stolen motorcycles.

The agents used a database to find a container still in the seaport that matched the description offered by the police in Virginia.

Federal agents pulled the container from the ship, opened it and found four salvage cars or sport utility vehicles. Salvage vehicles are vehicles usually purchased at auction for their parts value.

Inside the salvage cars were boxes containing disassembled motorcycles — a 2009 Harley-Davidson Night Train and a 2007 Kawasaki ZX660J.

Harley Shuts Down Buell

October 21, 2009 by · Comments Off on Harley Shuts Down Buell

Harley-Davidson will shut down its Buell high performance division and seek a buyer for Italy’s MV Agusta as part of a drive to bolster its core motorcycle brand.

The Milwaukee-based bike maker, which has been hit by a steep decline in sales during the recession, also said on Thursday that it would put a growing emphasis on markets outside the US. It aims to boost foreign sales from 31 per cent of the total this year to at least 40 per cent by 2014, appointing 100-150 new dealers outside the US.

Keith Wandell, who took over as chief executive in May, said that “growth is the single most critical need for Harley-Davidson right now”. The company announced an 84 per cent plunge in third-quarter earnings and a 21 per cent drop in revenues.

While the Harley brand is recognized worldwide, Mr Wandell said that “we have great conviction that there is much more we can do to tap into the power of that brand and extend it further”.
