Harley museum opens Saturday

July 11, 2008 by · 1 Comment

Milwaukee – Chances are you won’t look at the Harley-Davidson Museum in the same way as entertainer and motorcycle collector Jay Leno.

For one thing, he’s already seen it.

Harley calls the museum – which opens to the public Saturday – a celebration of the company’s history and the passion of its riders. That may be open to interpretation, but we’re here to tell you that inside the 14-foot-high doors there is enough to educate the hard-core rider and entertain someone who has never lifted a leg over the top of a Hog. (The last part is something the uninitiated might not be able to say after leaving the museum, but that’s getting ahead of the story.)

New Virginia Toll Lanes Designed to Create Congestion

July 8, 2008 by · Comments Off on New Virginia Toll Lanes Designed to Create Congestion

Illegal political contributions helped an Australian firm land a lucrative toll road deal that grants the company unprecedented power over Northern Virginia’s transportation future. Last week, Transurban wrote and asked state lawmakers to return checks that the Melbourne-based toll road operator had written in violation of federal campaign laws. But the deal these contributions helped bring about has already been finalized.

In June, the US Department of Transportation created a first-of-its-kind $1.6 billion financing package that consisted of tax-free bonds, loans and state taxpayer grants to support the project that will add a pair of High Occupancy Toll (HOT) lanes to the Interstate 495 Capital Beltway just outside of Washington, DC. To this amount, Transurban only added $349 million of its own capital — less than the cost of interest — toward the construction of the toll lane.

Helmets Enforcement for Moped Drivers

Waynesboro City Council also addressed the possibility of enforcing that helmets be worn by all moped riders throughout the city. This after a deadly moped crash happened over the weekend.

Police say the rider was not wearing a helmet at the time of the crash on the corner of North Delphine Avenue and Sixth Street.

Councilmember Nancy Dowdy says this fatality proves that city council must take action by moving forward on an ordinance, “I’m afraid that as the fuel crisis gets worse, more people are going to be riding them, and brain injury is a very real result of moped accidents, or scooters, or whatever you want to call them.”

As gas prices rise, so do the sale of motorcycles. Now DMV officials say motorcycle accidents are up more than 40% since 2006. They say a lot of those accidents are because of inexperience, but you do have some simple options that will help you buy a bike…and live to spend the money it can help you save.

They’re beautiful machines but if not driven properly, they can end up in an ugly and terrifying scene.
