The United States House of Representatives Committee on Energy and Commerce today passed legislation that would make it illegal for insurance providers to exploit what is known as the “source of injury exclusion” loophole, the Motorcycle Riders Foundation (MRF) reports.

Under current law, insurance providers can refuse to pay for treatment of an injury based solely on the source of the injury, with no prior notice of denial of benefits for that source of injury simply by pointing to the “source of injury” law that exists today.

Some sources of injury that can be used as a reason by insurance providers to refuse payment of medical bills are motorcycling, snow skiing, ATVs and horse back riding.

MRF Remains Neutral in Presidential Race

With the national parties’ conventions behind us, we no longer have “presumptive” presidential nominees. Senators McCain and Obama are now the standard bearers of their parties. As the summer begins to fade, the campaign for the highest office in the land kicks into high gear.

It’s hardly a surprise that the Motorcycle Riders Foundation should be asked our opinion of the two men seeking the presidency. It should also not come as a shock that the high-spirited men and women who form the framework of this nationwide organization may express opinions on the candidates.

Motorcycle Parking at the Virginia Beach Ocean Front

August 31, 2008 by · 5 Comments

Saw this letter to the editor in the daily press.

On Aug. 23, my husband and I headed out on our motorcycles from Gloucester to the Virginia Beach oceanfront. We were fortunate enough to get a metered spot on Atlantic Avenue. We parked our bikes and fed the meter some change. Upon our return to the bikes, we found we were the lucky recipients of two parking tickets –– one for each bike –– at $12 a piece.

We immediately checked the meter and found we still had 1 hour and 46 minutes of paid parking. What we also discovered was we were ticketed because we parked both of our bikes in the same spot. We had four tires in that spot, the same as one car would have.

I thought that 2 bikes were allowed to share a spot down at the beach? Anyone know for sure?

Moped riders adjust to helmet rule

August 20, 2008 by · Comments Off on Moped riders adjust to helmet rule

BLACKSBURG — Forget the romantic photos of windswept babes with coifed hair motoring around Europe on curvaceous Vespas. Beginning in October, moped riders in Blacksburg have two choices: helmet hair or a $50 fine.

Technically, the new helmet law — which requires helmets and eye protection for riders and drivers of mopeds — went into effect Aug. 12, after Blacksburg Town Council approved it on a unanimous vote. But for the next few weeks, police will focus on education instead of punishment.

08NR16 – MRF News Release – Republican National Committee Director Meets with MRF

August 18, 2008 by · Comments Off on 08NR16 – MRF News Release – Republican National Committee Director Meets with MRF

On a picture perfect August day, the Motorcycle Riders Foundation believes that it elevated it’s lobbying efforts to a new level. For several months the MRF had initiated letter, e-mail and phone correspondence with the Republican National Committee (RNC) requesting a meeting. The hope was to discuss our concerns with them over several appointees and members of President Bush’s administration. We felt that going to the hierarchy of the Republican Party would be a unique course of action to attempt to
influence this (and future) administrations.
