An upsurge in motorcyclist deaths was reversed last year in Virginia, but state officials say too many fatalities still are occurring.
Virginia Department of Motor Vehicles spokeswoman Melanie Stokes is reminding drivers to be more aware as the weather improves.
“As the weather gets warmer, more motorcycle riders are hitting the roads in Virginia,” she said. “Motorists need to share the road with motorcycle riders, while motorcyclists are reminded to follow the rules of the road and to wear helmets and other protective gear that will increase their visibility.”

The Motorcycle Riders Foundation (MRF) is holding its inaugural ride to the Nation’s Capitol for Motorcycle Awareness Month. The MRF is encouraging bikers nationwide to ride their motorcycles to Washington DC for this historic event. We have reserved secure parking for motorcycles adjacent to the U.S. Capitol; this location should make for an impressive display of bikes.

As the weather improves, motorcycle riders will be hitting the roads throughout the country. In anticipation of this, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration would like to remind motorists to “Share the Road” with motorcycle riders, while motorcycle riders are reminded to follow the rules of the road and wear safety helmets and other protective gear that will increase their visibility. Local organizations are joining with highway safety and law enforcement in proclaiming May 2009 as “Motorcycle Safety Awareness Month.”
