08NR27 – MRF News Release – The Motorcycle Riders Foundation attends Fifth Federal Highway Administration Motorcycle Advisory Council Meeting
November 19, 2008 by Hersey · Leave a Comment
Last week the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) held the fifth meeting of the Motorcycle Advisory Council. The Council convenes twice a year to discuss infrastructure issues of concern to motorcyclists. The Motorcycle Riders Foundation Vice President of Government Relations, Jeff Hennie, is one of the nine seated council members.
“This council meeting was significant because it was the first meeting since the charter was extended past its initial two year trial run” said Jeff Hennie. He added, “The likelihood of keeping this council intact well past the congressionally mandated 2 years is very good and gets better with each accomplishments of the council”.
Beware of deer on the roads

November is the peak month for collisions of vehicles with deer.
The number of people who die as a result of vehicle-animal collisions is increasing nationally, according to data from the federal government.
The number of people who have died in such crashes increased from 101 in 1993 to 150 in 2000, and 223 in 2007.
“The months with the most crash deaths coincide with the fall breeding season,” said Anne McCartt, senior vice president for research for the Highway Loss Data Institute.
“Crashes in which people are killed are most likely to occur in rural areas and on roads with speed limits of 55 or higher,” she said. “They’re also more likely to occur in darkness, at dusk or at dawn.”

Virginia Motorcycle Lobby Day – January 18 – 19, 2009
November 15, 2008 by Hersey · Leave a Comment
Once again our Virginia Legislature is about to convene, a dangerous time for all Virginia citizens. They will tackle issues concerning every aspect of your life. How much of your paycheck you get to keep, what roads will be free versus toll, where and what you can smoke, and many other issues from the sublime to the ridiculous. What’s this mean to you as a Virginia motorcyclist? There will be legislation concerning your rights as a rider. Some will enhance safety, some may enhance freedoms. There will surely be some from well intentioned non riders that will cause concern for the riding community.
On January 19th, 2009 the Virginia Coalition of Motorcyclists (VCOM) will give you a chance to have your say. We start Lobby day with a conference on Sunday afternoon, this year it will be January 18th at 12:00 noon at the Holiday Inn Crossroads in Richmond. We will go over the basics of lobbying, address every bill in consideration that affects motorcyclists and the ins and outs of what they will mean if passed. That evening we have an absolutely top notch BBQ dinner prepared by Stuart Newton of Hampton Roads Harley Davidson. This year he is adding beef brisket and mustard based BBQ sauce. Should be the best yet!
