MRF Leaders Report- June

June 10, 2008 by · Comments Off on MRF Leaders Report- June

WASHINGTON UPDATE – The Motorcycle Riders Foundation (MRF) is pleased to report that the United States Department of Transportation (USDOT) has renewed the charter for the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) Motorcycle Advisory Council (MAC) for an additional two years. The MAC advises the Secretary of Transportation on all issues concerning motorcyclists and infrastructure issues such as roads, bridges, and barriers. No rulemaking was required to extend the charter; instead it was the positive results of the MAC that warranted the go-ahead from the country’s chief transportation boss. The MRF commends Secretary Peters for recognizing the need for the MAC to continue. Under normal circumstances Secretary do not reauthorize councils that they do not have to. Peters by law did not have to renew the charter which uses some of her very limited discretionary dollars to fully fund this council. That’s why we thank her for her attention to this very important issue.

As gas prices soar, so do scooter sales

June 10, 2008 by · Comments Off on As gas prices soar, so do scooter sales

In his 17 years as a salesman at Sunrise Cycle & Watercraft, Roy Ford has never seen an item sell so fast.

Motorized scooters are flying off the lot. He even bought one himself recently.

The dealership on East Little Creek Road in Norfolk sold 23 scooters in May, compared with the one or two sold the same month last year. Record-high gas prices, Ford said, are driving people to consider two-wheelers as a cheaper alternative to cars.

June 9, 2008 by · Comments Off on Motorcycle classes full of people wanting to save money

As the price to fill up your gas tank continues to get more and more painful, people all over the country are searching for ways to save on gas. One of the solutions is driving motorcycles instead of cars.

At Virginia Western Community College, Faye Hedrick is learning to ride a motorcycle.

“Save a little bit on gas because I’m furious about the gas prices. I’m furious,” Hedrick said.

She’s taking a motorcycle safety course. Like many people, it’s one way to fight back against the gas prices.

Robbie Knievel clears 21 Hummers

June 9, 2008 by · Comments Off on Robbie Knievel clears 21 Hummers

Robbie Knievel FORT WORTH – Daredevil Robbie Knievel, son of the late Evel Knievel, got the crowd going before the race, by clearing 21 Hummers on a motorcycle against a stiff wind that stood the track’s flags straight out.

Knievel gripped the throttle and pointed his speeding bike toward the ramp on the track’s frontstretch. It launched him high above the SUVs, and he hung there a moment – buffeted by gusts as fireworks and flames shot up around him – before landing with a little bounce and plenty of room to spare.

Gonna be a hot one…

June 6, 2008 by · Comments Off on Gonna be a hot one…

Looks like it is going to be pretty hot across most of Virginia this weekend.  Temps are suppose to reach 100, with a heat index of 110, here in South Eastern VA.  If you are out and about this weekend – stay cool, take frequent breaks, drink plenty of fluids (water dammit), and wear a little extra sun screen.

Have fun and be careful out there.
