Lane Splitting In Virginia???
June 2, 2008 by Hersey · 15 Comments
I received the following email from a VABiker.NET reader with a question about Lane Splitting:
“ I just got transferred into VA from year-round-riding-Puerto Rico. I’ve been riding for over 20 years in PR. There splitting lanes is actually allowed due to the many traffic jams and so that your bike doesn’t heat up. When I starting riding in VA, I was told that lane splitting in not allowed. That is totally BS!!! Traffic around the DC metropolitan area sucks. Is there a movement to make it legal here in VA?“
Does anyone out there know if there has been any effort to allow lane splitting in VA? As fas as I know this is not something that has ever been the focus of any legislative efforts.

A motorcyclist, who hit the gas rather than stop for police in York County, was killed early today when he lost control and crashed, State Police said.
Sgt. Michelle Cotten, a State Police spokeswoman, identified the victim as Dustin Joe Barrack, 22, of the 300 block of Yorktown Road.

WASILLA — Professionals commuting to work with helmet hair and a change of clothes stashed in studded saddlebags, orthopedic surgeons and Wal-Mart freight workers, stay-at-home moms and ladies with leathers over their work clothes — all of them mark a new breed of driver taking to the open roads of Southcentral this spring.
They’re all motorcycle riders motivated by record gas prices to switch to two-wheeled transportation.

9 easy lessons Motorcycle safety course can teach old riders new tricks
June 1, 2008 by Hersey · Leave a Comment
For new motorcycle riders and those returning after a hiatus, the Motorcycle Safety Foundation’s basic Motorcycle Rider Course teaches the skills needed to ride safely and enjoyably.
Besides, successful completion will earn you the motorcycle endoresement without taking the state test. Best of all, the course is free to Illinois residents.
But what about experienced riders? Most of us have been riding for years without incident—a few close calls, maybe—though rider training would benefit us too.

Students get motorcycle-safety lessons
Few elementary school students are riding motorcycles yet, but Utah officials are taking their motorcycle safety message to those students in hopes they’ll carry it home to their parents and older siblings.
“Children are great parent police,” Keri Gibson of the Utah Highway Safety Office said. “They will go home and encourage their parents to be safe.”
The office has taken its Ride Aware, Drive Aware campaign to 17 elementary schools across the state in response to increasing rates of motorcycle deaths on Utah roads.
